1st Epaggelmatiko Lykeio of Drama(1st EPAL) is a Vocational School located in the northern part of Greece.It has approximately 330 students,15-18 years old and 50 teachers.
1st EPAL has the following sectors:Mechanical engineering, Electronics and Electrical engineering, Construction and Applied arts. Students are taught lessons of general education such as Greek Language, English,Physics, Maths, Chemistry, PE, Biology etc as well as theoretical and laboratorial lessons in specific fields and specializations. There are also special classes for students with learning difficulties. Moreover, students are given training in well-equipped and modern laboratories. The graduates have access to Universities and labour market and the majority of them become successful entrepreneurs. Students’priority is to obtain a national diploma and find a job in their field. Teachers try to encourage students adopt a better image not only for their school but for the world they live in as well,to increase their awareness,to develop their critical thinking,basic life skills and key competences,to help them become active citizens able to protect the welfare of the city and strive for the development and prosperity of the region. |
Furthermore,teachers try to motivate students by participating in many projects such as enviromental, health and care, cultural, as well as European ones.
Drama has a long history which dates back to Greek ancestry and mythology to Byzantine and later Ottoman empire. It is poorly developed, therefore, 1st Epal has participated in several environmental and cultural projects to raise sustainability, environmental and cultural awareness and, thus, make Drama a better place to live. Through participation in such projects students' creativity and knowledge is promoted with a view to becoming critical and active citizens of the EU able to use their knowledge and expertise to the benefit of the constantly changing demands of everyday life. |
1st EPAL has students of cultural and multi-linguistic backgrounds and, therefore, varied and different learning needs. There is a large number of migrant students coming from countries of the former Soviet Union, financial immigrants from Albania and Bulgaria and a small percentage of Syrian refugees . Many students come from families with intensive economical problems since the region of Drama has high unemployment rates. All these categories have similar problems on education and adaptation.
It is housed in a two-storey building (total area 3,000 m2) which was built in 1963. Since then and in different time periods, various renovation, maintenance and restoration works of the building infrastructure have been done. The school has 20 classrooms, a science lab,a psychologist's office, a drawing room, a multipurpose room, a library, an indoor gym, 2 amphitheaters of 100 and 250 seats, administration offices, a teachers’ office and an Erasmus office. |
